Muslim groups in Trinidad and Tobago discuss Zakah

Thirteen participants representing six groups involved in Zakah Management participated in a workshop on “Zakah Management in T&T” organised by Central Zakah on Saturday 31st January, 2009.

“Zakah,” one of the pillars of Islam, is “a specific amount of wealth which is due on an annual basis or at a particular time on certain types of wealth of Muslims which meet clear-cut requirements and is distributed to special classifications of people or for specific purposes- all within the confines of Islamic Shar’ia”.

Incorporated in 2002, Central Zakah’s main objectives are “to design and conduct educational, training and research programmes aimed at enhancing Zakah management in T&T and increasing Muslims’ awareness of and commitment to establishing Zakah.”

The event provided an opportunity for Zakah Managers to discuss common issues related to the collection and distribution of Zakah. Based on the reports presented, it appears that the administration of Zakah is improving and growing in T&T. Among the issues identified for further discussion are the promotion of Zakah management at the Jamaat level and networking among Zakah Managers at the national level. One of the recommendations emanating from the workshop is the hosting of a National Zakah Awareness Week in 2009.
